Good-Enough Housekeeping
my mental health/psychiatry podcast is out now, updates on the Zine form, and a thank you before the ban (?)
Hello and happy Monday of possibly the last week of Tik Tok in the US! We have some updates on projects (completed, and changing), community, and this page. Onward!
If you like reading my words, you may also like listening to them in a more contextual conversation via podcast. My podcast with that one psych resident with a mustache is out now, and it’s called How to Be Patient. It’s all about mental health, psychiatry, working in healthcare, and talking about trends around mental health and wellbeing we see online. We try to be funny and useful, which we do occasionally succeed at. You can follow it anywhere you get pods, and find a link to it on your player of choice here.
The above has been in the works for months, so for the past month or so, I’ve been working on launching this SubStack, with equal parts romanticizing, thinking anew about mundane creativity, and writing about wellness trends in a way I wish magazines would. When I began this, I had wanted to make it into a Zine, and began trying to figure out the design form of that, so the aesthetic could be right. Some of you began following me for that.
Reader…design is hard. I knew this, but I triple know this now. In the last two weeks, with the shift off of Tik Tok coming, I’ve had to really ask myself how and what I can do well, and how I can provide that—at clinic, on TT as long as we have it, on Substack, and in my life. I’ve found a rhythm here over the last month writing each week, and I love that I can be responsive to what is on in the culture and news. I’ve loved how dynamic it is. I’ve loved, most of all, being able to interact with you all and have a chat started. I’ve also realized that what I love to do and what I am most useful to you doing is writing, with some design and photos included in my posts, but not at InDesign.
Because of this, I have decided to not go forward with a PDF Zine. For the time being, my writing will mostly live here on SubStack. Paid articles (50% of my articles) will continue each week, and free articles will still be 50%. I wanted to be transparent about this as I know some of you are here for that, and while I continue to put much time, effort, and thought into creating the paid articles here, I also know some came for the full Zine effect, and may want to unsubscribe or change their tier level, and wanted to make you aware of it before the next month charges. To my paid subscribers in general, I want to again thank you for being here. It’s a dream to be paid to write, and as of today there are 64 of you! 12-year-old Margaret with her binder of ripped up 17 magazine articles and daily reading of Glamourmag.com would be astounded. She cannot thank you enough.
I’ve been loving the chat function on SubStack, in addition to comments and notes. This is a nudge for those of you who get just the email that if you want a place to talk about the articles as they come out, the challenges (ie like Avoidance Advent or 75 Grow), we are doing so there. Is it the TikTok comment section? No. But it’s still been really fun to check in with each other and have some accountability and discussions.
Wherever you are in the world, I hope you are staying safe. In the US in the past week, the LA wildfires and severe cold weather along the east coast have left many people under harsh circumstances. If that includes you, let us know if we can be of any use.
I hope you enjoy your scrolling time this week, if you are a TT user. Screen time is about to be LIT.
February challenge will be GTFO Your Phone February. If you want a zine esque journal, you can get last year’s on my Etsy, here. I love that journal, and I will be re-reading it myself this coming month, and writing more about it here.
Take care, and I’ll see you tomorrow!
xx,
Margaret of Bad Art Every Day
